No Good Night for Gentle Beasts

(This is the sequel to Let Slip the Beasts, so the reviewer should probably have read that one before diving into No Good Night for Gentle Beasts. Maria Ashford reviewed Let Slip the Beasts.)

Can one lonely weapon kill an empire?

Three years have passed since the events that changed Kaliope Dearborne’s destiny forever and set her on a path to ruin. She has carved out a meagre existence for herself, working as a fixer for The Syndicate, a criminal organization that pays well and has no qualms employing a person that technically doesn’t exist. Kallie fixes anything, and anyone, they deem a problem. But she has her own plans for the organization; to turn their considerable might against her nemesis VyroGen, the medical research corporation that created and destroyed her.

Her plans are thwarted, however, when her Syndicate handler is compromised and she has to decide between doing what’s easy and doing what’s right. On the run with her handler, Kallie soon learns The Syndicate can’t be trusted, and that VyroGen has been cooking up terrible plans for her and the people she cares about.

Once again, Kallie is thrust into the very heart of VyroGen where she’s faced with their newest batch of experiments, and an impossible choice. To defeat these new creations and escape, she must band together with new friends, and old enemies. She might survive the monsters VyroGen has let loose, but what will she have to sacrifice in the process?

NO GOOD NIGHT FOR GENTLE BEASTS is an explosive, gut-wrenching cyberpunk story bursting with newly-hatched experiments, morally bankrupt corporations and monsters wearing human faces.
